We are always thinking of how to apply our ideas of origami to architecture. We are looking for any chance to investigate it. At the project we are currently working on there is a long corridor wall that we “folded”. We hope this folded wall will provide interest for the people walking through this corridor on the way to the reception desk for their MRI appointment. These day people call any object which is composed from many flat planes ORIGAMI, but  our geometry of the wall allows the planes  actually really fold-able and open-able. We want  to emphasize the fundamental difference from the fad. But this one may be too hard to read this aspect once it is painted and finalized.

フォールディングを建築に応用したいと何時も考えてる。どんな機会も生かしたい。今のプロジェクトには、長い廊下があるので、そこに大きく折れた壁を製作中。この大きさの折紙でしっかりしたものを作ることは大変なので、いつもの建設材でオリガミを再現。人々がMRIの受付に着くまでの長さを感じさせないように、というのが発想。最近は、分割された平面によって表面が構成されてものはすべて“オリガミ”と呼ばれたりするけれど、私たちのはそれらとは異なり、原理的に折り畳みができるパタンで出来ている。本質的に違うアイデアだから、そうゆう流行から一線を画したい。けれど、これが完成した時、それが読み取れるだろうか、はてさて?　ともあれ、この廊下は最終的に壁で仕切られてオフィスになる予定で、この折れ壁は取り壊されることになっている。

In the summer of 2012 Mayor Bloomberg will launch the public bike rental system in Manhattan; Bike Share. Today we walked around our neighbor to choose locations for the stations recommended by the DOT. This system started in Europe in major cities like Paris and Barcelona, where anyone can borrow a bike and return it at one of the many stations located throughout the city. Almost every 100m you should be able to find a station there will be 600 stations with a total of 10,000 bikes. They are proposing the stations on wide sidewalks, in parking spaces or on the private plaza’s that are called public because the developer who built them received a bonus to build more floors by providing a “Public” space. We will get a chance to discuss the locations with our neighbors and the department of transportation next week.

この夏にブロングバーグ市長が打ち出した公共レンタル自転車を配備する計画が起動する。パリ、バルセロナなどヨーロッパの都市で始まったシステムで、誰でも町中にある駅で借りて、どこででも乗り捨てできる。その自転車はまた他の人が借りてゆく。地下鉄と乗り継いだり、自由に町を行き来出来る。今日は交通局が挙げたレンタル駅の候補点から、ベストポイントを選ぶべく、実際に通りをしらみつぶしに歩いた。マンハッタン中で６００駅、全部で一万台の自転車が配備される。約半径１００ｍごとに一駅できるので、ほぼ必ず見えるところに１駅はある算用。路上駐車の枡をつぶしたり、幅広の歩道や、公開空地（公共の為に土地所有者が設けるもの。その代わりに高い建物を建設することが出来る制度、日本にもたくさん、あるのだけれど、所有者の建物を飾る前庭としてしか機能していないのがほとんど）　に作られることになる。次週に交通局と地元の人々との話し合いがある。新しいことに何でも拒絶反応をする反対者がかなりいて、一筋縄では行かなさそう。

Surprisingly not everyone wants a bike share station located on their block. We are very happy to have more bicycles sharing the streets but at the community meeting with our neighbors there will be many fighting to have them moved “somewhere else”, they still think that bicycles are dangerous, that they ride on the sidewalk and invade the territory of the pedestrians. They take a fighting stance and cannot imagine that pedestrians, bicyclists and cars can share the streets.　Let’s find spots everyone thinks  good!!

私たちは大歓迎。しかし、これまでのコミュニィティー委員会でわかったことだけれど、自分たちの近くに駅が出来て欲しくない人々もいて、駅をどこかへ移そうとファイチングポーズを取る。彼らは自転車は歩行者や車の安全を脅かすと考えているので、自転車の市民権を認めたがらない。危険で乱暴な自転車はずっと減ってきているのだけれど…。皆がいいねというスポットを探ろう!!

This morning, on our terrace we saw a dove was kicking  his/her mates off of the feeder, even those that were  trying to land at the edge of the table that the feeder sits on. The fellow doves were forced to nibble on the food scattered on the floor.  Then a sparrow came down to the feeder. It is eating with the aggressive dove!! Without being kicked off. The sparrow is not a competitor for dove? What is going on?

今朝のテラス。一羽のキジバトが餌を独占すべく、テーブルの端に留まった仲間を蹴落としている。追いやられた他の３羽は床に散らばった落ちた餌を啄ばんでいる。鳩、スズメ、駒鳥、カーディナル、マネツグミ、カケスなどなど、マンハッタンは結構いろんな鳥が生息している。餌の無くなる冬はスーパーなどで鳥用の餌が売られているほど…。と、そこへスズメが舞い降りた。奇妙なことに、スズメは鳩に追い払われることなく餌にありついている！！何が起こっているのだろう？鳩にとって、スズメは生存競争の相手ではないのか？

From their behavior it does not seem that they simply want to occupy all of the food. If so is it an issue of pride like humans?  They are not planning out their behavior, so does the code in their DNA drive them to do so? Anyway there is one thing for certain; the birds can recognize the hierarchical difference between the floor and the table. It is very interesting for an architect. The animal’s social space is recognition? Let’s keep observing.

単に物理的に餌を奪われたくないというのは、どうも行動原理ではないみたい。ならば、まさか人間のようにプライド（？）が問題なの？彼らは考えて行動している？….じゃないとしたら、DNAのコードがそうさせているのか…？ともあれ、確かなことが一つある。この鳩は、このテーブルがその回りの空間とは違うということ、テーブルと床の高さの違いをハイアラーキーとして認識している、ということだ。これは建築家にはとても面白い。動物の社会的空間認識（？）、観察を続けよう。

Yesterday our constructing site received 2 MRI machines. Each weighs more than 8 tons, monsters. We don’t know why they are so heavy, because of the magnet coil? or the vacuum container for the coil? It is a very high-tech product but it was man handled into place by riggers. They seem to have a special atmosphere around them. They have a pride in their ability to move these monsters. They have a high potential to lose their hands, limbs, or even their lives. If they dropped this machine $ 1.6 million would be gone and the building structure would receive serious damage.  And through all this one of the team was chewing gum constantly and the foreman was chatting about the financial market.

昨日、 ２機のMRIが工事現場に配達された。中の磁場コイルが重いのか、それを冷却する真空容器が重いのか？よく知らないけれど、一機８トンの怪物。超ハイテックのMRIだけど、運び込むのは素朴なトビの仕事。彼らはいろんな職人の中でも特別な雰囲気がある。日本のトビと同じく、高いプライドを持っているように見える。間違えば、手足が飛んだり失命したりする。ここでこれを落としたら1.5億円がオシャカになるし、建物の構造体も決定的に傷む。でも、それはそれ、さすがアメリカ、ガムを噛んでいる兄チャンがいるし、チーフもお母ちゃんの話しをしている（ようだ）。

We heard that a hospital brought an oxygen cylinder into the MRI room by mistake and the heavy cylinder flew into the magnet, oops………  In order to detect the tiniest of fluctuation of nuclear spin in the patients organ, an extremely strong magnetic field is imposed. The strong magnetic field  is created by cooling down the coil to nearly minus 270C where conductivity disappears. Science explained  nuclear spin and super conductivity  just 50 years ago and technology quickly applied them to be utilized in our daily lives, yet for many people it is still a black box. Hopefully one day everyone will be able to share the concept behind these ideas.

ある病院でスキャン中の患者の状態が悪化したので、慌てて酸素ボンベを誤って運び入れたところ、あの重いボンベが空中をすっ飛んだそうな…..。患者の組織内の原子核スピン（すべての物質が持つ基本属性の一つで、質量とか電荷といった、なんとなく感覚で分かる量と異なり、２０世紀に発見された概念) の変動がスキャンされるのだけど、検知できるだけの高い値に上げるには、強力な磁場が必要。マイナス270度近くになるとコイル内の電気抵抗が無くなって電力供給なしで電流が流れ続ける。これを利用して、巨大磁場が永久に維持される。核スピンも超伝導も、馴染みのある普通の感覚からは押測れない現象。科学 がこれらの量子現象を解明してから半世紀足らずで、科学技術が素早く応用して生活に利用できるレベルへ持ち込んだ。 人々には、しかし、どちらもブラックボックスのまま。何時の日か、そうでなくなる時代が来るだろうか？それとも永遠にブラックボックスのままになるのか？

We checked out the new UNIQLO shop at Fifth Avenue which opened 3  months ago. There were a lot of customers. The interior design is not the  kind to knock your socks off, but the bright design and changing lights keep your eyes busy moving around the shop and pleasantly amused rather than the zen style of Muji another popular shop here. Japanese products and culture seem to have faded away as we hear only news about the Chinese, but some Japanese companies are aggressively working to keep up. A lot of the staff were wearing “happi” or Japanese jackets, flapping all over the shop and activating the space. We could not find any female staff wearing them, probably because it is not so cool looking.

フィフスアベニューにユニクロができて3月あまり、今売り出し中。初めて入ってみたところ、お客でいっぱい。インテリアデザインはハッとするようなことはないけれど、目を楽しませるような明るいデザイン。無印のような”ゼン（禅）スタイル”とはだいぶ違う。このごろは中国の話題ばかりで、影の薄い日本だけれど、がんばっているところもあるんだ！。店員の着た「ハッピ」が店内にたくさん旗めいていて、店を活気付けている。ところが、女性のハッピ店員は一人もいない。さすがに野暮イのかも。

O ne of the staff kindly went up to their storage to search for my size, and a happi boy organizing the shelves came and told us “ Don’t worry, typically we will find the size”. After all he could not find it, so we left but with a pleased feeling.

合うサイズがないんだけれど？と一人に聞いたら、倉庫にあるかもと見に行ってくれた。待っていると、棚の整理をしていた別のハッピ店員が、「心配ないですよ、たいてい在庫があるから」と言ってくれた。結局無かったのだけれど、快い気持ちで店を出た。

The results of the international competition we have been organizing are being exhibited at  CUNY Baruch College, these photos are from the opening reception yesterday. Our local council member Dan Goradnick introduced the project which involves a complex land negotiation with the United Nations.  The Press, , community leaders,  representatives of the local community  and Austrian Trade commission and others came via the press release. The winners from Vienna and Washington were at the opening explaining their projects. Here is more from the press.

イーストリバーのグリーンウェイのギャップをつなげようという活動の一環で国際コンペを オーガナイズしていましたが、その結果を昨日から一ヶ月間あまり、ニュ－ヨーク市立大学バルーク校のギャラリーで公開しています。写真はそのオープニング レセプションの様子。最初に地方議会のDan Goradnick氏がスピーチ。このプロジェクトが国連との間で複雑な交渉を含むことになることを説明。次にオーストリアのウィーンとワシントンからの受賞者がそれぞれの提案を説明。プレス,　オーストリー貿易コミッション、地域委員会のメンバー、地元の人びと、プレスリリースで知って来た人などなど、大勢が来ていたのはとてもうれしい。インタビューなど、プレスの報道.

と英語では言うらしい。外見は里芋とそっくりだけれど、芋は作らない。地下茎を湿地の中に走らせて育つ。ブランクーシの有名な彫刻みたいな、流線型のが最初出てきて、それから巻きついていた葉がスローモーションで、ほぐれて行く。こんな風に折りたたまれていたんだ!!。相似形を保ちつつ芽が次第に大きくなる双子葉類とはだいぶ違う。オリガミの構造に近い。ちなみに、ゾウの茎の間から細いのが何本も出てきているのは、ゾウではなくてネコのしっぽ（cat tail、日本語で蒲）。ゾウもネコも外で冬は越せないので室内に入れたのだけれど、まるで春のように育ち始めた。

This  looks so much like the Japanese taro sato-imo, but it  does not generate any taro, instead its rhizomes run in wet soil.  New aerodynamically shaped stems emerge from the water looking like one of famous sculptures by Brancusi. One of the buds revealed this process this morning. It’s  leaf unfurls gradually in a slow show. Isn’t It quite different from the paired leaves of the dicotyledonous plants, whose bud keeps growing in a similar shape as  when it first came out from the stem. This reminds me of the folding structure of origami.　The leaves between the elephant ears are cattails.  We brought them inside hoping they will survive the winter. They started growing again as if  it is  spring.

We have been working for decades, but I have never seen this. I know some performers use these, but I found this at our ongoing  construction site. It looks like a standard product. It should be more efficient than a ladder. I remember one of questions on the exam for a 1st class architect’s license in Japan was to pick the names of the animals which are often used at the construction site. The correct answers were (saw)horse , (…)cat and something else (in Japanese); maybe they should add giraffe. I am totally sure the intention of the question was “architects must understand humor”.

何十年も、工事現場に出入りしているけれど、こんなのみたのは初めて。竹馬は もはや大道芸のものでしかないと思っていたけれど、今やっているプロジェクト の現場で見つけた。このほうが梯子を動かしながら作業するより,ずっと能率がよさそう。市販されているに違いない。十数年前、一級建築士試験の問題に、工事現場で使われる動物の名を当てるというのがあったのを思い出す。正解はウマ、ネコ、それになんだったかもう一つ。これらは工事に使われる道具の名前。建築家はユーモアを解すべし、というのが出題の趣旨だったに相違ない。

Another surprise is he is a only one African American among dozens of workers here. We have been working with contractors and workers and so far they are from Ireland, Russia, Mexico, Croatia, China, Korea, all over the world except from the USA at the sites.

もう一つ、見慣れないことで、アレっと思った。この現場で 何十人という職人が働いているけれど、アフリカ系アメリカ人に出会ったのはこれが初めて。僕たちがこれまで付き合ってきた職人や建設会社はアイルランド 人、ロシア人、メキシコ人、クロアチア人、中国人、韓国人、などなど。でも、アメリカ人はいなかったから。

This Christmas we received a great present, two books arrived that have our projects published in them, Global Style from DOPRESS features the Town School and RE-modeling from DAMDI. When we opened the package from DAMDI, we found more than 30 pages showing 4 of our projects at the very end of the second volume (again alphabetical). It is totally a coincidence but both books are heavy and thick. RE-modeling is supposed to be sold all over the world, so we want to recommend it, but it seems that it is not so inexpensive….. Architects with a lot of experience like us are scattered in between young architects who are the majority of those featured. We hopefully jumped to the conclusion that maybe our style is young!! Actually the book shows the current trend is quite different from 10 years ago. How? We want to come back to this issue next post.

このクリスマスに二社の出版社からプレゼントをもらった。私たちのプロジェクトを掲載した本がおくられてきた。一つはDOPRESS社からタウンスクールの劇場を載せたGlobal Style、もう一つはDAMDI社から４つのプロジェクトを載せた　RE-modeling 。DAMDIからの包みを開けたら,　二巻目の最後のほうに （ またもやアルファベット順!! ） 私たちの仕事が３０ページあまり、ぞろぞろ出て来た。この本は世界中で売られるはずなので、お勧めしたいところだけれど、あまり安くないみたい、なので…。取り上げられた建築家たちは大方が若くて、私たちのような中堅がその間にぼそぼそ混じっているという印象。私たちのスタイルは今風なんだと早合点をすることにした。実際この本に載っているデザインは１０年前とは隔世の感がある。どう違うか？次回でそのことを考えてみたい。

This area is famous for it’s hiking trails and draws hikers from all over the state to see the incredible views from the mountain top.　It has been a destination for nature loving New Yorkers since the late 1800′s.　Our friends are some of them. Between the houses of the locals there are scattered the second houses of New Yorkers.　We  helped them to pull down some huge wild vines that were as thick as an arm tangling the limbs of  a tall tree on their property.  Hoping it will become a hedge in the spring, we left them on the ground and will return in the spring to see what has happened.

この写真は山頂にある池。巨大で長大な屏風岩の上に載っている。貯水はニューヨークに供給されるという。この地域は１９世紀末からニューヨーカーを引き付け続けていて、ハイキングルートが充実していている。彼らのセコンドハウスが地元の人の住宅の間に散在している。友人もその一人。家は旧所有者の家を改修したもの。驚いたことには、建物があるほうが不動産の価値がずっと高くなるらしい。更地にしないと売れない日本では考えられない。日本では土地の販売価格から既存建物の取り壊し費用が割引されたりさえする。何でもマッサラでないと気持ちが悪いという日本人の精神文化をよく反映している。長年近所を潤していた木々も、周りになじんだ建物も、通りのたたずまいも、キレイサッパリと無くなる。これまでの「時間」が全部消える。「この建物は保存に値すような大したものじゃないから」 という人もいる。確かに３０年後かそこらで取り壊す見通しだから、そのクオリティーもそれなりかもしれない。でもこの友人の家も最初は本当にひどかった。台所の回りはゴキブリの糞で真っ黒、油でごてごてだったし、何もかもボロボロ、建具はがたがたを通り越していた。しかし次第に手が加わって、今はいい感じになってきた。僕らもちょっと手伝いをしようと、腕ほどある太い野生のブドウのツルを 巻きついている高木から外して束ねた。春にはブドウの新芽が出て、生垣のようになることを願いつつ、ここを去った。
