We were invited to a garden party by a family living in a rural area north of Toronto. They moved there over 30 years ago. Their house behind reminds me of a shed with low ceilings, small spaces and the roof and floor are tilted. But what a wonderful space!! The yellow wing became old enough to tear down but instead last year they reinforced the deteriorated parts and the foundation was replaced. The garden looks nonchalant but must be carefully maintained and designed with an enormous effort. Just beautiful!!
ファミリーパーティー＠カナダに招かれる。トロントから車で一時間。田舎住まいの老ホストは音楽家夫妻。数十年前にここに移ってきたという。各自の持ち寄った食べ物で、１時から７時ぐらいまでダラダラとやる。背後に見える彼らの家は小屋と言っても良いぐらいこじんまりとしていて、日本の住宅より狭いし、低い天井は頭を打ちそう。写真では判らないけれど日本人には拒絶されそうな、みすぼらしさ（？）。いたるところがガタピシ鳴るし、床や屋根はかなり傾いている。（日本ではとやかく言われるけど、日本の大工の職人技は多分世界一といって良いと思う。） ところが、どっこい、このずばらしさは何なのか !?! 庭も家と同じように無造作に見えるけれど、大変な気を使って設計され、メンテされている（に違いない）。一体、どうしたらこうゆうことが可能なのか？ 知っている人がいたら教えてほしい。

黄色い小屋が昨年ついに崩れかけたので基礎をやり代え、いろんなところを補強したり新しい材に変えたとのこと。新築するより高くついたらしい。 The yellow wing became old enough to torn down but last year reinforced and old parts and the foundation were replaced.
