We listened to a Bach performance at St Thomas church where we started our Easter parade. Arriving an hour early for the performance (in search of a good seat) we luckily saw the final rehearsal. Among the casual outfits I found that the conductor looked Asian. His totally white hair reminded me of someone and I looked into the program. He is Massaki Suzuki!! He is known as one of the best Bach performers in Europe…we found him in You Tube. The orchestra is also well known, the Julliard 415. I remember a loud guy at a party saying that so many students come to the Julliard from Japan and China, but what the hell are they going to do after they graduate? I guess he misunderstood that he is surrounded by a global culture and he never thought that classical music would be popular in Asia. Many European musicians perform in China now. Actually the majority of the audience and orchestra members were Caucasians with some Asians.
イースターのパレードの時と同じ聖トマス教会で、バッハのミサ曲ロ短調を聴いた。一時間前に中に入れたので、運良く最後のリハーサルをやっているのを見ることができた。普段着の演奏者たちの中、指揮者の後姿がどうもアジア人ぽい。うらやましいほどの純白の長髪なので、これはもしやと思って案内を見たら、やっぱり鈴木雅明さん！主にヨーロッパを中心に活躍していて、バッハ演奏の世界で屈指の一人、らしい…ユーチューブで知った。オーケストラはジュリアードの人々。先々週のあるパーティーを思い出した。 「毎年、ジュリアード校にアジアから学生がゾロゾロ入るけれど、卒業後は一体どうするだんべ？」と大声で言う人がいた。彼は自分のスタンダードがグローバルだと思っていて、クラシックがアジアでポピュラーなんて想像だにしないのだろう。確かに、ここを見渡せば、聴衆とオーケストラはヨーロッパ系が大方で、アジア系はぽつぽつだけど。
We often hear a beautiful phrase; “Music is a universal language over the world” but can we conclude that so easily? The music simply organizes and reinforces your brain to understand that particular type of music, doesn’t it? in other words your brain gets used to that type of music. Bach’s music is a huge source of not only Western classical music but also popular music (tonality and technique of structure..and so on). His music is considered universal but for me it is actually the other way around. The history of music development kept quoting Bach and gave people a frame of understanding. That is why his music is so popular. It is like an “enclosure” as if you cannot go to another airline once you join a frequent flyer program. I wonder if architectural design isn’t doing the same thing?Anyway it is strange for me, his music is different from others even though he is a father of music. The more you listen to his “counter point” the more you want hear it, it is like a drug. For my other favorite compositions if I listen again and again I will be saturated, but not with Bach. The ability of his music to organize your brain is exceptionally powerful; it attracts you at anytime night or day, it does not depend on your mood or the atmosphere and it does not generate images for me. Any kind of instrument is played with, it sounded as if he composed the piece for the particular instrument, even a digital sound generator. You can listen to something abstract, probably with a different part of your brain from the typical one.
音 楽は世界共通の普遍言語だという美句はよく聞くけれ ど、本当に易々と、そう言ってのけていいものだろうか？脳がある特定の音の体系に組織されているだけなのではないか？一言で言うと聞きなれると いうことではないか。バッハの音楽は彼以降の西洋音楽やポピュラー音楽さえも大小、何がしかの源となっている。（調性とか、その構成の技法など）。彼の音 楽が普遍 的と言われるのは、実は逆なのじゃないか？卵と鶏の関係みたいに、彼の音の作り方が後世代の人々の脳のシナプスをそのように組織し続けているから、だからこ そ、それがすばら しく聞こえるのではないか？マイレイージを貯めだしたら、他の航空会社に移れなくなるみたいな、一種の囲い込みではないのか？建築デザインも同じじゃない か？ と考えが飛ぶ。ともあれ、音楽の父バッハと言われるにもかかわらず、奇妙なことに、私にはバッハの音楽は他の音楽とはだいぶ違うように思える。どれだけ好 きな曲でも何度も何度も聴き返すと、いつか「もう良いや」という時が来るけれど、バッハの”対位法”は 逆にもっと聴きたくなる。麻薬のような効果がある。言うならば、脳シナプスの組織化の力が異常に強い。そして、他の音楽と違って聞き手の気分やその 時の雰囲気、朝、夜に関係なく聴きたくなる。音楽がムードやイメージを作りださない。どんな楽器で演奏しても、まるでバッハはその楽器のために作曲したように聞こえる、、機械仕掛けでさえも。抽象的な何かを 聴いている。普段に音楽を聴 く時に使う脳の部分と少しずれた所を使って聞いているような気がする。
Sitting in front of us were a father and his two children. The two children got bored right after this“universal“ music started and were ready to poke each other. Then the father came between them and held them tightly. Thank God!! For us our upper bodies were ready to start dancing, so hard to resist. Many parts of the mass were composed with dance forms. Suzuki is dancing, the choir members are dancing, everybody is dancing except the audience. We went home exited. Needless to say, the mass in B minor was played again through Youtube.
目の前に信者らしい親子が座っていた。子供たち二人はこの“普遍的な”曲の演奏が始まって直ぐに飽きてしまった。今にも突付きあいをしそうな気配。父親が間に入って子供を両脇にギュウギュウに抱きかかえた。ああ、よかった！助かった！もっとも、僕らは( も )、上半身が今にも踊りだしたくなるのが止められなくなっている。ほぼミサ局全編がダンス形式でできているから、しかたがない！。鈴木さんも踊っている。合唱団もオーケストラも、聴衆以外はみんな踊っている。興奮冷めやらぬまま、家に帰った。ユーチューブでもう一度ハシゴしたのは言うまでもない
