It’s well known that Manhattan Island has a grid of streets, but what happens when the street hits the riverbank at the edge of the island? Not well known. In the middle of the island, in Midtown, it just hits the river and creates a dead end. This small park is one of them. The highway runs under this park.
マンハッタン島は碁盤の目に通りが走っていることは良く知られているけれど、じゃあその通りが島の端に水岸に当たったところでどうなるか？…. よく知られていない。島の中ごろ、ミッドタウンでは、まさに川に当たってブツリと切れて、袋小路になる。そこが小公園となっている。高速道路はこの公園の下を走っている。
There is a circular bike path on Manhattan Island, but it will be cut off below this point. There is no land for continuing it here. Ten years ago, we organized a design competition called Close the Gap to build a bike path and promenade to complete the path.
マンハッタン島には自転車道が環状に回っているが、ここに至って切れることになる。ここではそのための土地が無い。10年前、私たちはこの高速道路の向こう側、つまり水面の上に自転車道、遊歩道を作ろうと、クローズ・ザ・ギャップ（切れ目を締めよう）といういう設計競技を企画した。
150 proposals were submitted from all over the world. Since the project was independent of government funding, it did not produce a plan that was implemented. We still don’t know if the competition had any impact, but the gap is getting closer to being closed now. Piles are being driven in the river, and a structure built on them is running parallel to the shoreline.
1５０ほどの案が世界中から寄せられた。行政府とは独立した企画だったので、具体的な計画には至らなかった。そのインパクトがあったかどうか、今もって、わからないけれど、今、その切れ目が短くなってきている。川の中に杭を打ち、それらの上、川と並行に走る構造体が出来上がっている。
On the other hand, the dead end spaces on the city side are being developed as parks. This is one of them. It is always lively with neighbors. People who come by baby carriage, people who let pets walk, and circles of friends are naturally formed. It’s ideal to be able to go back and forth freely between the promenade and the bicycle path, but unfortunately the heights are so different that I can’t cross from this park. However, a bridge has been built a little further south. These are the results of advocacy by the community with support from Community Board 6 (sixth regional residents’ consultative committee).
一方、地上側の袋小路も公園として整備されつある。写真の右側はその一つ。近所の人々でにぎわう。乳母車で来る人々、ペットを歩かせる人々、自然にサークルができている。遊歩道兼自転車道と自由に行き来ができるのが理想なのだけど、あいにく高さが大きく違うのうで、この公園からへは渡れない。しかし、もうすこし南には橋が作られている。これらはCB6（第六地域住民協議委員会）のメンバーとして仕事をして来た成果である。
To become a true Manhattan encircling path+ promenade, only a few hundred meters behind the United Nations remain unconnected. A little more to reach the goal. What if a circle train line like the Yamanote line in Tokyo was cut off somewhere and it wasn’t a real loop? Unimaginable, how would the city function. When completed this route will look natural and you will not be able to remember the current situation.
マンハッタン環状自転車道＋遊歩道と本当に呼ぶには、国連の裏側の数百メーターが残っている。もう少しだ。仮に東京の山の手線がどこかでブツリと切れていて、本当のループでなかったら、どうだったろうか？想像できない。ループが完結したら自然なことのように見えて、きっと今の状況が思い出せなくなるだろう。
