We’ve mentioned several times that our volunteer group takes care of this park on the waterfront of the East River on the east side of Manhattan Island. It is called East River Esplanade which is one of a series of linear parks along the East River. There is a highway, the FDR running between the river and the city, so to get to the park you have to go through a tunnel under the highway. This tunnel runs between ramps to get on and off the highway, making it a dangerous and totally unpleasant introduction to the park.
マンハッタン島の東側を流れるイーストリバー川のウォーターフロント沿いには長い遊歩道がある。その一部であるイーストリバーエスプラナード公園は私たちのボランティアグループがその面倒を見ていることをこれまで何回か取り上げてきた。川と街の間に高速道路が走っているから、街から公園へ行くには高速道路下のトンネルを潜ることになる。このトンネルの入口と出口の両方が高速道路に乗るためのランプが掠めて走っているので、公園に行くのに危険で不愉快な経験を強いられる。
On top of that, the inside of the tunnel is dark, dirty, and smelly. It’s out of the sight of the Parks Department, so it is rarely cleaned, making it a perfect “private toilet”. Moreover, the walls have become a haven for graffiti “artists”. Our group decided to turn this into a welcoming entrance to the park. At first, we thought about making it like this sketch,
おまけにトンネルの中は暗く、汚く、臭い。公園課の管理の目が届かないから掃除もされない。絶好の私設便所になっている。さらに、壁は落書きの天国と化している。私たちのグループはここを公園にくる人々を歓迎する入口に変えることにした。最初はこのスケッチのように作り込むことを考えた。
but we didn’t have the money for it. In addition, the highway pictured above is scheduled for major repairs in the next few years. But we can’t wait until then. Is it possible to change the impression of a space with just easy inexpensive tools ?
しかしそのお金はない。その上、頭上の高速道路は大規模な補修を数年後に予定している。だが、私たちはそれまで待てない。安くて簡単、素人でもできる方法で空間の印象を変容（ガラッと変える）ことができないか？スタディーを重ねた。
We did a lot of studying. It will be a great success if it looks like a three-dimensional folding pattern, and if you can associate even a little bit of the water waves coming in the park ahead (by accident the colors are slimier to our blue T shirts). Does it appear to greet people as the entrance to the park? This mural is quite different from most murals. It doesn’t tell the history of New York and it doesn’t celebrate human wisdom. There are no allegories or literary metaphors here either. We don’t want you to stand here and admire the murals. (Actually, we saw quite a few people stopped to stare at the mural!) It celebrates you visiting the park at the end of the tunnel, but it doesn’t celebrate anything else. If this photo makes you want to visit the park and view East River some day, you can say that this mural was a success.
この写真がその結果。もし、立体的なオリガミ模様の様に見えたら、そしてこの先の公園に寄せる水の波をほんの少しでも連想してもらえたら、大成功 (この配色は私たちのユニフォームの色に似ているのは偶然）。公園への入り口として人々を迎えているように見えるだろうか？この壁画はいわゆる壁画とはだいぶ違う。ニューヨークの歴史を物語りはしないし、人間の英知をセレブレートすることもない。寓話や文学的比喩もここには無い。ここに立って、この壁画を鑑賞してくれることを期待していない。（かなりの人が立ち止まって壁画をじっと見てくれているのを見て、嬉しくはなるけれど）。このトンネルを出て先の公園に行こうとしているあなたをセレブレートしているが、他の何もセレブレートしていない。もし、この写真を見て、この先にある公園に行ってイーストリバーをみようという気になったら、そしてそれを見つけた時「ここだ！」と思ったらこの壁画は成功したと言える。
Practical considerations were also an important design strategy. This pattern does not create a blank background that encourages a scribble, and is designed to suppress graffiti. The ugly doors, electric cables and the rough unfriendly walls disappeared, now they are invisible. I think the result transformed this into a different space.
実際的な配慮も重要なデザインの要素であった。まるで「落書きしてください」というような白紙状の壁にならないよう、落書きを抑制するようなデザインを考えた。そして、もし落書きされても、簡単に上塗りすることで元に戻すことが出来ることを考えた。ドアやら見苦しい電気配線、不愛想な壁は見事に消え去った、いや、目に見えなくなった。結果は最初のデザイン意図を超えて、別の空間に変容したのではないかと思う。
We have added the contact information for the planners of this volunteer activity so that people will realize that this project was completed through the will, ingenuity, and the efforts of volunteers, hoping that more people will volunteer to join us and change the world together, starting with something close to them.
そして、これがムクムクとひとりでに現れたのではなく、「やっつけ仕事」でできたのでもない、意志と工夫、そしてボランティアの労力を経て完成した「プロジェクト」であることに気づいてもらうために、企画者とボランティア活動の連絡先を書き添えた。さらにたくさんの人々にボランティアに加わってもらって、身近なところから世の中を一緒に変えてゆくことを望みながら。
P.S.
Can we really say that our pattern is superior to their graffiti ? This is an inherently difficult question to answer. I think it’s worth noting that it’s not obvious that their art can be erased by our art. This work took one week on one wall and one weekend on the other, and during that time graffiti was written on the unpainted blank wall. They did not graffiti on our new pattern! I would like to respect that consideration, even if we will start a long fight with their work.

私たちのパタン画が落書きに優先するアートであると本当に言えるだろうか？これは本質的に難しい問いだ。我々のアートは彼らのアートに勝っていて、上書しても構わないという理屈は自明ではない。この作業には片面の壁に一週末、反対側の壁に一週末掛かっているが、あいにく、その間に落書きされた。けれど、それは未だ我々のパタンが書かれてない、もう一方の壁であった。彼らは我々の新しいパタンの上に落書きすることを控えたのだ。これから彼らと長い闘いが始まるだろうけれど、それでもその配慮を素晴らしいとおもう。
