Easter Parade 2023 イースターパレード

New York’s Easter parade is a spring ritual. You might have seen it in the Hollywood movie starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, it’s become a tradition to make special hats and walk down Fifth Avenue. We have been participating in this event by making new origami hats each year. We have not joined Since 2018  due to the pandemic. There was a parade last year, but it was too rushed to have time to come up with a new design-but we had plenty of time this year and decided to try something a little different.

ニューヨークのイースターのパレードは春のお祭り。ジュディーガーランドとフレッドアステア主演のハリウッド映画からを見たことがあるかもしれない。特別な帽子を作ってフィフスアベニューを歩くのが名物になっている。僕らもこれまで、ずっとオリガミの帽子を新作して参加していたのだが、この数年パンデミックのために2018が最後になっていた。昨年は再開されたけれど、急すぎて新作を考案する時間がなかった。しかし、今年は時間はたっぷり。少し違った傾向でやってみることにした。

Until now, the theme of origami hats was to make interesting hats using only folding patterns. This time, the idea is, ”if you make a pattern on the paper, wouldn’t that be even more interesting?” If you think about it a little, you’ll understand that the folding pattern and the pattern are completely independent and can be superimposed in any way. Therefore, the challenge lies in how to synchronize them to create an interesting hat.

これまでのオリガミ帽子は折りのパタンだけを使って、面白い帽子を作ることが主題であったが、今回のは、もし材料の紙にパタンを書いたら、もっと面白くならないか？という発想。ちょっと考えてみるとわかるが、折り線のパタンと模様のパタンはまったく独立していて、どのようにでも重ねる事ができる。だからどのようにシンクロさせれば魅力的な帽子にできるかが、勝負である。

So far, most of our origami hats have expanded a little beyond the origami definition. True origami can be unfolded into a perfectly flat piece of paper, but our origami hats can be unfolded into cones. In other words, it becomes “a completely flat piece of paper by cutting it only once” (see Figure 1). This might be called extended origami. A simple closed two-dimensional curved surface can be opened with scissors to create a perfect plane, but there may also be complex objects that cannot be laid out into a plane with a single cut. (By repeating more cuts, we may be able to define a higher-order “extended origami”, such as cutting 2-times, 3-times, or more……. Some examples are shown at the end of this post.)

これまでの私たちのオリガミ帽子のほとんどは、オリガミの定義から少し拡がっている。真正なオリガミは折りを戻すと、完全な平たい紙になるのだが、これらのオリガミ帽子は折りを広げると円錐になる。つまり、「一回だけハサミを入れてカットする事で完全な平たい紙に」なる。（図１）これは拡張されたオリガミと呼べるかもしれない。閉じた単純な2次元曲面をハサミを入れで開くと完全な平面になるのだが、一回の切断で平面に展開できない複雑なものもあるだろう。（これを繰り返して、2回のハサミ入れ、3回のハサミ入れ…という風に高次の拡張されたオリガミも定義できるかもしれない。本稿最後にその例を掲載）

Now, one of the hats is shown below with a single cut and unfolded (or conversely, before the edges are glued together). The black pattern that looked complicated was a simple stripe.

さて、帽子の一つに一回だけハサミを入れて展開した状態（あるいは逆に、辺を接着する前の状態）が以下に示されている。複雑に見えていた黒のパタンは実はシンプルなストライプであった。

Stripes, will always work on origami like this? The answer is no. A semicircular shape is a critical condition. If it is an arbitrary fan shape instead of a semicircle, the stripes will not be smooth and will have an angle (see Figure 2) when the edges are connected.

ではストライプならばどんな紙でもこのような帽子になるか？というとそうはいかない。半円であることが決定的な条件である。半円でなく、任意の扇型では端の辺を繋げた時にストライプは角度が付いてしまい、滑らかに連続しない（図２）。

Then, are there patterns other than stripes that are smoothly continuous when connected? We tried to apply other patterns for some of the hats. Can you visualize it? Then, are there others? Yes, anyone can come up with a concentric black pattern. You can also forget about synchronizing and make one half all white and the other half all black, or even a panda pattern, but we thought they are not as much fun. The original paper does not have to be a semicircle, a fan shape may be possible with new patterns. New ideas came up on the way home from the parade. Hopefully, we can show some of them next year.

では、繋いだ時に滑らかに連続するパタンがストライプ以外にあるか？他の帽子にはストライプでない模様をあれこれ考案してみた。これらは展開されたときにはどんなパタンになのか？折る前の姿を想像されたし。同心円の黒パタンなんてのは誰にでも思いつく。折り線とシンクロさせる事は忘れて、半分が全部白、残り半分が全部黒なんてのや、パンダ模様もあり得るが、面白くない。新しい模様ならば、紙は半円でなくても扇型で成立するかもしれない。パレードから帰る途中でアイデアが出てきたので来年はそれをお見せましょう！

Appendices, 付記

Below is an example of origami that can be flattened with scissors. These were devised in the creation of internal spaces using origami and also the development of objects that fill space infinitely, but we rearranged them under the category of “extended origami”. (There is a difference between whether cutting with scissors can extend the paper to a flat surface regardless of where the cut is made, or whether the scissors can do it only in a specific location. So, it seems that it will not be so simple.)

以下はハサミを入れてフラットになるオリガミの例。これらはオリガミを使って内部空間を作る事や無限に空間を充填するオブジェクトの開発で考案したものだが、「拡張されたオリガミ」という括りで再整理してみた。（ハサミ入れの場所がどこであっても平面に展開するのか、特定の場所のみのハサミ入れで展開できるのかの違いがあって、一筋縄ではいかなさそう）

Easter Parade 2016 イースターパレード

Here we are on the avenue…for the annual Easter parade. It was wonderful sunny warmish weather and lots of people were out and about. This year we introduced a new line of “circular” hats and remodeled the “Audrey Hepburn” from last year. Always fun to see the reactions and be part of a New York ritual.

今年もイースターのパレードに加わろうと、このアベニューを歩いている。すばらしい天気、まずまずの陽気で人でいっぱい。今年の折り紙帽子は去年からのオードリーヘップバーン型に加え、同心円型の新ラインをご紹介。今年も大変な反響。

The folding lines of the new model are circular so some people may have a problem calling these hats origami. Although you can extend the traditional definition of origami a little – “origami is formed from a flat sheet by only folding without any cutting in principle”. We made joints to make the folding  easier, but  if you have extremely fine fingers, special tools  and the right paper product, you do not need any joints.  The new model  is composed from a cone which is “mathematically” flat or 2 dimensional, or curved but not warped. As a matter of fact the “Audrey Hepburn” is also a cone before folding, like the new model. The two new circular models are slightly different. Can you tell the difference?

今年の新ラインは曲線の折パタンが使われている。毎年折り紙帽子をいろいろ試してきたけれど、ここまで来ると折り紙とは ちょっと言い辛いような気もする。曲面が入っているけれど、それでも一枚の紙を折るだけでできている。伝統的な折り紙の定義をちょっと拡張しさえすればよい。制作上の技術的な理由で、継ぎ目があるけれど、無限に細い指と道具、それに特別製の紙があれば継ぎ目は必要ない。今回の新モデルは円錐面を折曲げて作られている。それは数学でいう二次元的に平坦な面で、ウォープしていない。実は去年のモデルも円錐からできている。今年の曲線モデルの二つの帽子は微妙に形が違うのだけれど、さてどこが違うか？（３つ の去年のモデルも折りパタンがそれぞれ少しだけ違う。）

We were often asked how to make the hats. We explained the procedure, but I guess it does not satisfy their curiosity, but it is so difficult to explain how we came up with this form. First we have a vague idea of what pattern is fold-able mathematically and what the final shape will be. But that does not mean it will be beautiful and interesting.  Imagining the final form we modify within that idea and make several test pieces. We tried not to mimic the traditional hat this time. If you emulate the classical form it easily becomes elegant and understandable. Although we are doing folding why not explore the design mathematically? Why not let the mathematics drive the design and have the hat be a byproduct? It may unexpectedly be very beautiful but we do not want to lose the sense of a hat.. to balance them was difficult.

毎年、みんなからどうやって作るのか質問を受ける。一連の作業のプロセスを説明するのだけれど、たぶん彼らが本当に知りたいのは、どうやってこの形に辿り着くのか？ということかもしれない。でも、それを路上で説明するのかなり難しい。まず、どのようなパタンなら折ることができて、どのような形に折り上がるかという数学的なアイデアが最初にある。しかしそれだけでは必ずしも面白い形にならないので、出来上がりを想像しながら、そのアイデアの中で自由にできる部分を変えてみる。そして、数個の試作品をつくる。今年のラインは、帽子であることは守りつつ、できるだけ、既成の帽子の形にならないようにしている。これまでの帽子を思い出させる ようにすると、比較的簡単に違和感のない優雅な形にできる。けれど、せっかく折り紙でやっているのだから、もしそうでなかったら思いつかなかったような異形ができあがるのじゃないか？しかしそれでも帽子の雰囲気は失なわないようにする、その辺のバランスが難しい。

This years Easter parade on 5th Avenue was a beautiful spring day. We did not have so much time to prepare this year so we decided to reuse one of the existing design  from  last year’s parade and make 6 variations of  it. They are all similar but slightly different…so we  call them the “6 sisters”. Our friends and their friends helped us by being models. Some people may say the 6 sisters look like the petals of a rose. It is very appropriate for this parade which celebrates the start of spring.

今年のイースターのパレードは、暖かい春の一日に恵まれた。時間がなかったので、今年のオリガミの帽子は、去年の作品の一つを本に、バリエーションをデザインすることにした。だから６つの帽子は似ているものの、すこしずつ違いがある。題して６人姉妹。友人たちとその友人の友人がモデルになってくれた。今年の帽子は花びらに似ていなくもない。イースターパレードは花を載せた帽子をかぶって祝うところから始まったので相応しい。

The pattern before folding is exactly the same but by revising the order of the Valleys and the Ridges you can generate many variations,   V-R-V-V-R-R or V-R-V-R-V-R and so on. We picked the 6 most interesting forms among 6 x 6 combinations to create the hats. To be considered ORIGAMI they have to be made from a single sheet of paper, then the form becomes highly symmetrical like a flower. Actually it may be the way other around—-flowers are smiler to this folded hat… I mean the symmetry, periodicity and self-similarity you can recognize in this hat reflects the mathematical rules that may have something in common with the development of blossoms from a rule imbedded within the embryo….

折る前の紙にひかれた線のパタンは６つとも、すべて同じで、山谷を入れ替えることでバージョンができている。中心から、谷－山－谷－谷－山－山とか谷－山－谷－山－谷－山…などなど。６の二乗ほどの組み合わせの中から、６人の姉妹たちに合わせて面白そうな形になるものを選んだ。折り紙と呼べるには、一枚の紙から切り張り無しでできていないといけない。一点に集まる線の数は６本に制限して、対称性の高い形になっている。花の形にするためにこのオリガミを考え出したのではなくて、花を思わせるような形になるものを選んだに過ぎない。むしろ反対で、花がこの折り紙に似ているのではないか？ここにあるような規則性や対称性、自己相似性はシンプルな規則からできたもので、同じように胚から花弁に至る発達には、シンプルな法則が関与していているはず。それはこの折紙の折の規則に似ているかもしれない…　もしかして。

Every year we are asked lots of questions but this year many people asked if we sell the hats or the hat  design, and they recommended that we do so, even if we do not sell them now. We did not have this question until this year. If someone were to help us launch the business, we might be able to start folding for a larger audience. But for now we fold them as art pieces. By the way did Audrey Hepburn wear a hat similar to this in a film? or do we just think she would look fabulous in this hat…..

毎年いろいろ質問をされるのだけれど、今年は僕等がこの帽子をどこかで売っているのかどうかを何度も訊かれた。これでビジネスをするように勧められる。これまではそんなことは無かったのだが…。今はアートとして折っているけれど、もし誰かがビジネスを立ち上げるのを助けてくれれば、たくさんのお客さんのために折れるのだけれど…。ところでオードリ・ヘップバーンが映画の中でこんなような帽子をかぶっていたような気がする。違ったかな？何という題だったか、忘れてしまった。
